Nirsoptix Brain Monitor

TechEn is proud to have developed medical technology that improves - and saves - peoples’ lives. We have developed the near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) systems in conjunction with the Photon Migration Imaging Lab at the Massachusetts General Hospital Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging. Our NIRS systems employ the most advanced technologies available for non-invasive, optical brain monitoring.

Our non-invasive brain monitoring products are advancing the study of brain activity and improving quality of life for tens of thousands of people. Learn more about TechEn’s brain monitoring device. Current research applications include: brain studies for stroke, Alzheimer’s disease and Elderly Care, Traumatic Brain Injury, Training and Learning Disabilities, Schizophrenia, motor and muscle activities. NIRS and CW systems are used in the monitoring of neuronal activity in other clinical populations (e.g., epilepsy, migraine, coma/neurology, ICU) and simultaneously in other modalities (MRI, EEG and TMS).

TechEn has received four grants from NIH and one contract from DARPA for advanced optical brain monitoring technology. TechEn has developed its non-invasive, continuous and portable brain monitoring instrument in conjunction with Massachusetts General Hospital. TechEn uses proprietary DSP algorithms and FPGA firmware, providing the system with the benefits of fast assessment and excellent image resolution from 32 laser-sources and 32 detectors-receivers. TechEn’s success story for brain monitoring is featured on Analog Device’s web site. During the past three years, numerous research papers have been published by MGH and by other researchers using our instruments. TechEn’s systems are currently used in diverse research studies including stroke rehabilitation, autism, augmented cognition under stress, Alzheimer’s, early child learning, epilepsy, mental health, traumatic brain injury and homeland security. The technology is also being applied to non-invasive breast imaging.

During the past four years, TechEn has advanced dense array DOT as a platform technology and has applied this innovation for improved brain monitoring instrument solutions. To achieve this platform technology, TechEn has added digital signal processing for real-time control, algorithm development for improved image resolution, and computer software for ease of use and visualization

Real-time digital signal processing hardware and software have been developed by TechEn to provide fast, accurate and reliable system control in 32 lasers and 32 detectors. The proprietary DSP algorithms perform Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) on all 32 channels at a very high rate of 100 Hz. This technology has the capability to measure not only changes in hemoglobin and brain activity at 3 Hz, but also has the potential to capture fast neuronal signals at 50 Hz.

In summary, TechEn’s high performance, dense array optical technology solutions are most effective and unique, because they provide the highest quality image resolution from 32 laser-detector pairs. While dense array optical imaging technology has advanced brain monitoring solutions, the improved system will also have utility for the basic science community interested in functional brain imaging, and could have important implications for the monitoring of neuronal activity in other clinical populations (e.g., epilepsy, migraine, coma/neurology, ICU) and other modalities (MRI, EEG and TMS).

TechEn also offers accessories, customized software, and on-going customer support services to meet clinical and research needs. TechEn has sold 14 systems during the past few years. These systems are sold by TechEn and can be reviewed on our dedicated web site at <www.nirsoptix.com.
