Medical and Healthcare Electronics

NIRSOPTIX: Electronic Component Design

TechEn worked with Harvard University on the electronic component design and development of a novel, non-invasive optical brain imaging system for Harvard's medical research group at Massachusetts General Hospital, MGH. The program includes high speed data acquisition of optical signals at up to 100 HZ.

TechEn has received grants from the National Institutes of Health for electronic component design work in conjunction with MGH to expand the imaging capabilities in up to 32 lasers and 32 detector channels.

During the past several years, researchers have used TechEn CW4, CW5 and now CW6 systems to successfully study brain function and tissue oxygenation. Recent publications include groups world-wide that range from MGH in Boston, to Texas; from Montreal, Canada, to Beijing, China. The NIRS and CW systems have excellent signal to noise and are upgradeable to meet every budget.

The products are sold by TechEn and by our sister group NIRSOPTX. See our web site at www.nirsoptix.com

Sontra Medical Corporation

Sontra Medical Corporation is a technology leader in transdermal science. Sontra's SonoPrep ultrasound-mediated skin permeation technology combined with technical competencies in transdermal drug formulation, delivery systems and biosensors is creating a new paradigm in transdermal drug delivery and diagnosis. TechEn helped in the electronic component design and development of devices for this technology for use by Sontra, including continuous glucose monitoring and the transdermal delivery of large molecule drugs and vaccines. Sontra is currently marketing the SonoPrep device and procedure tray for use with topical lidocaine to achieve rapid (within five minutes) skin anesthesia. www.sontra.com

MDI Instruments

EarCheck Middle Ear Monitor for ear infections
EarCheck™ middle ear monitor

Cost reduction program for the EarCheck™ Middle Ear Monitor. The EarCheck is the first in-home device that allows parents to quickly and painlessly monitor children for middle ear fluid (otitis media with effusion) frequently associated with acute ear infection. TechEn challenges included: product evaluation for cost reduction, hardware circuit re-design, embedded systems firmware, and FDA, 510K compliance.

TechEn has worked closely with MDI Instruments and Becton-Dickinson Consumer Products division to develop a low cost version of the Earcheck device. Replacing a number of components with an Atmel AVR microprocessor, TechEn improved performance and reduced the existing bill-of-material cost by 50%. TechEn provided services to coordinate production in China while working within our customer’s FDA design control system.

Ultracision

Ultracision circuit board for Laparoscopic Surgery scalpel Ultracision

Performed design review and printed circuit board layout for the Harmonic Scalpel used for Laparoscopic Surgical Procedures. The Harmonic Scalpel allows surgeons to make incisions with minimal tissue damage. The device simultaneously cuts tissues and seals blood vessels, which combined with videoscopic surgery means faster recovery and less patient scarring. This device has been purchased by and is marketed by Johnson & Johnson.

TechEn Splint and Cast Device for Safe Use in Hospitals

Portable splint and cast system for hospitals
Techen splint and cast device

TechEn has received a patent for a medical device that facilitates the forming of splints and casts. The medical device was developed for Massachusetts General Hospital and is used throughout the hospital. The primary advantages are that electrical heat allows for safe, antiseptic use at patient bedside, without the need for very hot water. The device is used for hand, arm and leg casts. Shown above is the portable system using Orthoplas material.

TechEn: Development of the Isolated Transducer/ECG Amplifier which provides an economical and patient safe means to record cardiovascular data on computers, strip charts or data logging devices. The ETH200 provides two channels that are user configurable as transducer amplifiers for recording blood pressure and other strain gage measurements, or as bioamplifiers for recording ECG signals.
